Why Choosing The Right Cycling Clothing Is Important
Aside from the obvious (weather protection
and safety), why else is it important to choose the correct cycling clothing?
- The right fit. Cycling clothes are cut-to-fit; especially helpful for when you’re
leaning over handlebars. Shirts and jackets should have a longer back to ensure
your lower back is covered, and legwear should have a higher waist to ensure
the same effect too. The sleeves of cycling jackets and shirts should also be
slightly longer than regular versions to protect the wrists, while the bend of
specialist cycle legwear is designed to complement your waist and knees so they
don’t impede your pedalling.
- Movement. Cycling clothes are designed to move with you as you ride;
this is especially important for legwear as it’s your legs that will be moving
the most on the bike. This is why cycling shorts and tights are made from
fabric such as Lycra; it has enough built-in stretch that it doesn’t bunch up
and chafe.
- Handling sweat. If you’ve ever ridden in cotton clothes under a jacket, you will
know why specialist cycling clothing isn’t made from the same material; cotton
absorbs moisture, rendering your body cold. Clothing that has been specifically
designed for exercise are made from fabrics that work to move moisture away
from the skin, allowing it to evaporate. It’s what’s known in the trade as
‘wicking’, as it works in the same way as when wax is drawn up a candlewick.
- Padding. Having extra layers on when cycling is important for a number of
reasons; the first being for shock absorption. At our cycling clothing shop in
Reading, we have modern shorts pads that have at least one layer of foam inside
them (often with more or a different thickness and density). This helps to
reduce the shock your backside will experience on the road, as it works with
the padding in the saddle. Secondly (and more importantly), having extra
padding will help you to avoid the extremely uncomfortable experience of
chafing. Another area where extra padding can help is the gloves; proper
cycling gloves have pads sewn into the palms to deal with vibration from the
handlebars, further making your rides comfortable.
- Efficiency. Having clothing designed for the rigours of cycling will not only
provide protection but also boost performance too; making you go faster by
ensuring you don’t waste as much energy. As cycling clothing is more
aerodynamic than regular outdoor gear, it fits close to the body, meaning there
is no spare fabric flapping about in the breeze. Cycling shoes help to save
energy too; their stiff soles ensure that you don’t have to flex the rubber
underneath your foot over the pedals. This also makes cycling shoes comfier
because the pressure on the pedal will be spread out over your whole foot,
rather than one specific area.
