Seat Posts and Saddles
Seatposts
Seatposts are available in a variety of materials; alloy, carbon and titanium. Each has different characteristics and should be selected appropriately. For example, carbon frames can give a harsh ride so many cyclists choose to fit an alloy seat pin to give some respite from the road vibrations that can be transmitted through a stiff frame. Conversely, a carbon seat post on a titanium frame would enhance rigidity and liven up the riding experience. Many different sizes are available, both in length and diameter, so it is important to ensure that the correct size is purchased. With many different diameters available it's possible to shim a smaller diameter post to fit a larger diameter frame. Obviously it is not possible to reduce diameter so ensure that you know the inside diameter of your seat tube before ordering.
Saddles
The most common source for discomfort amongst new cyclists is the seat area. This isn't a new phenomenon, so as you would expect, lots of time and effort has gone into alleviating the problem. A large range of saddles are available to fit all shapes of cyclists. There are a variety of widths and types of padding available so do not worry - there will be one to fit you! Be patient though, as with anything there will be a settling in period so it is important to give your saddle a chance before deciding to invest in another! There are specific saddles to suit female bone structure, so there is no need for women cyclists to compromise any longer.
