All of our staff members are passionate about cycling and test the bikes themselves – the main motivator for us all is to see as many people as possible enjoy the great outdoors on their bikes. We undoubtedly feel that Orange encompasses all this (and more).
The company can trace their origins to Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1986 and an urban bike provider called ‘Muddy Fox Courier Group Comp’ that was acquired by keen outdoor sports fan and windsurf company owner, Roger Tushingham. Having been inspired by the growing sport of mountain biking, Tushingham endeavoured to create a range of bikes that would appeal to adventure sportspeople, and this was the market the company eventually concentrated on.
Launched in 1987, the Tushingham B-52 was a fully rigid steel mountain bike that became an instant success when it hit the market – selling out extremely quickly. However, the company decided a name change was needed to fit their outdoor adventure image; something that spoke to the mountain biker, suggesting that it could ‘do a bit of everything’. They hit upon ‘All Round’, which was quickly nicknamed the ‘O Range’ – this eventually morphed into ‘Orange’.
Although the ‘Orange’ moniker was initially suggested as a joke, the distinction the name provided (and a shared love of the movie ‘Clockwork Orange’), persuaded Tushingham and his partners to redub the B-52 to the ‘Orange Clockwork’. Introduced in 1988, the bike became one of the more popular ranges on the British cycling scene, becoming the company’s most enduring model – to this day, variations of the Orange Clockwork are still produced, providing new generations of cyclists with the same high-quality rides.
The design of Orange Bikes have remained pretty-much consistent – aside from a brief change of their linkage design with the ST4 model, every Orange full suspension bike are built to the following criteria:
The design has remained consistent because it works – modern platform shocks are added to negate any ‘pedal bob’ issues that might affect other single pivot designs (mud and grit is kept away because the pivot itself is out of the way). The design of Orange Bikes have lent themselves well to the growth in wheel size over the years – 605b and 29er wheels, especially. Their original approach to design turned out to be great futureproofing, making the Orange brand timeless, yet extremely practical. This will doubtless make any investment in one of their models a wise one, simply for the longevity it can provide – and of course, the quality and comfort of the ride.
