Founded in 1986, Marin Bikes take their name from their birthplace; Marin County, California. The sport of mountain biking was very much in its infancy during this time, so the company was well-placed to appeal to a new market of thrill-seekers. The company’s founder, Bob Buckley, took up the sport on the advice of his doctor and soon found himself loving it – so much so, he looked to improve the riding experience by dreaming up better bicycles.
Teaming up with local biking experts, the company launched its first model, the ‘Madrone Trail’ that made an immediate impact on the market; selling out and laying the groundwork for thirty years of mountain bikes that focused on performance. Their next model, 1988’s ‘Marin Team Titanium’, broke new ground as one of the industry’s first mass-produced titanium bikes.
This innovation continued into the 90s as the company grew a reputation of being a pioneer in full-suspension design. 1993s Marin Titanium FRS (‘Front and Rear Suspension’) incorporated earlier Manitous suspension components, weighing only 25 lbs. This weightlessness made it ideal for competitive mountain biking and thus, professionals flocked to the Marin brand; Jürgen Beneke piloted the Titanium FRS to a World Championship in ‘93, sealing Marin’s reputation.
It wasn’t just riders on mountain trails that Marin Bikes were catering for; the 1990s saw a resurgence of road bikes and the company saw this as an opportunity to create its first hybrid and road models. This expanded the brand into new segments of riders, including the popular urban biking movement that is popular today.
As of now, the brand continues to enrich the lives of riders by creating fun, high-calibre bicycles which will provide years of enjoyment. The business continues to be based on their philosophy of hard work, fuelled by passion and fulfilled by the satisfaction of bringing joy to cyclists around the world.
